Sierra Building Group (Sierra Homes) Markham ON: www.sierra.ca

by Richard

Dealing with Sierra homes has been an awful experience. It has been close to a year and all our requests have been done poorly (according to a sub contracted worker it is due to the low quality materials provided by Sierra homes) or our requests have been totally ignored. My father in-law has contacted Leigh Pawlick from Sierra homes numerous times, as have I and she seems to avoid calls and emails are met with short messages lacking in detail.

Our biggest complaint with Sierra homes has to do with our balcony and air conditioner. It has been two months short of year now and all the balcony’s and air conditioners are up in our condo townhouse division, and our home still hasn’t received any attention. Why from the beginning did they skip our home is a complete mystery to me. We have been told over and over again (emails can be provided) that they are working on it, or “2 to 3 days” - was what I was told I received and this has gone on for a long time.

I will try to post up a link to pictures of the strange work done inside of this home when I get the chance where I have posted this same review on yelp.ca.

This is discouraging for anyone who chooses this builder, but hopefully your information leads to people examining their choices carefully before signing a contract! There is nothing worse than having a bad and unreliable builder, with no good insurance that they will get their work done correctly, or with decent materials. Good luck with everything…

    interesting comments.
Our experiences with Sierra, and especially with Leigh Pawlick were quite good. We found her to be very responsive to our requests and our needs.
Maybe that old saying “you can catch a lot more bees with honey rather than vinegar” applies.
I would have no problem in recommending Sierra to my friends.

Some Houses and Homes get built and completed correctly and lots of others do not. We have owned and built a large number of homes over 35 years. The quality or lack thereof, depends on weather, sub trades, suppliers, and builder attitude..right from the top down!
Many builders, you will find over time, are the same, small businesses, mostly profit driven and not always quality focussed - so it can and does suffer.
    There are many exceptions.
This company may be like so many others — if one homeowner complains, the Head Office makes sure everything is done “right” for everyone else in that subdivision –at least for a while, til people move or forget.
Use your own common sense, document everything, via paperwork, pictures and inspections by neutral sources –call in Mike Holmes if need be. Avoid personal attacks on the company, owners or employees, it will only haunt you later. Save your angst and sleepness nights for something really worthwhile, do not stress out and if it is really bad sell and move when you can. Good luck. Do not let one home builder rule or ruin your life!

  9. Great post! I’ve been wondering for a while how you might start improving their own Alexa position and today i know. Nevertheless, i’d would rather spend my time on much more productive tasks.

    Hello Richard,

Thank you for the article, and I feel homeowners need to speak out against unprofessional builders! Far too many builders get off easy because no one stands up to them. Sierra is a poor sub-standard builder, and people need to know this.

The owner of the company, Morris Kansun seems very unprofessional, their service levels are mediocre at best, and their onsite staff barely know how to hold a hammer.

Personally, from our experiences, I would say: watch out, do your research and be careful of what you are buying in to.

Thanks for the article Richard, and I hope this makes people think about what they are investing into!

Hey Stu, did you glean all of that knowledge from just reading this blog?
How do you know so much about the owner of Sierra ?

So what I am really saying is, what exactly is your agenda and who are you really? So easy to hide in the web isn’t it and fling mud.

Yea. This guy Stew. Sounds like he has some sort of axe to grind doesn’t it??
Richard at least seemed to have a legitimate complaint. Stew was just bitching for the hell of it. It’s malicious guys like this that ruin blogs.
Get a backbone Stew and come clean.

    Danny and Gerry,

Not too sure what you have against people expressing their opinions on blogs, but that is essentially the purpose of blogs!

I purchased a home built by Sierra and have had nothing but aggrevations and headaches! You seem to be very defensive towards the comments that I made, have you worked with Sierra? Do you have any experience or intellegent feedback to add to this conversation?

I’ve purchased a home from Sierra. Nothing has really gone off the rails as far as voiding anything in the contract, so I cant legally make any complaints. They have already pushed back the closing date twice now. I know with new home builds it always gets pushed back from the first original closing date, but I didnt expect they would push it again(just one month off). Leigh hasn’t really explained anything whats the reason for the delays.

I just dont like to be told a date, then they change it, then they change it again. I hope its the last time they delay this since there have been many good days this year.

What I do like is the location, the layout of the townhouse I got, and the layout of the neighbourhood. The standard decor selection weren’t too bad either. I also purchased the house on their opening day so I got 5 free appliances and airconditioner.

I’ll leave another reply when I have finally moved in.

Very poor communication with the builders rep. I’m a first time home buyer. I would think the builder will help guide us through this process, but with the lack of communication doesnt help. Sends me an email saying I’ll get a reply back. Nothing happens. Hell, when I went in to choose my decor, it felt like she didn’t even know what house she was selling. I asked what the ledge that was in the shower, shown in the blueprint. She didn’t even realize it was there, nor did she know what the hell it was. Is this the norm?
