Sears Canada employees are abused

By xemployee of sears canada

Hello all ….reading this,

I would like to mention first that I feel sorry for most of sears employees and that it be known how much abuse they deal with on a daily basis, besides the fact that they are underpaid, and truly shown no respect by the (Management)so called ……….Ass. store managers and the corrupt leader big shot store manager who report to their corporate head office daily…..the truth is that there is nobody that trains new employees, they were fired long ago!

The customer service is beyond belief…………yes I know because I handled some of the problems or tried too…………it is absolutely unbelievable how this company or corporation stays in business……….why?because it prays on ignorant ,elderly, and immigrant people who just do not understand what or who they are dealing with until it is to late!

Sears makes up its policies as it goes and lies to everyone, and once they are cornered they ” the Management” does the blame thing to their loyal associates(employees)….. after first advising their highly overworked so called team leads to fix the problems that they really have no control over……..in other words TOTAL CONFUSION! and TOTAL LACK OF COMMUNICATION AT SEARS EVERY DAY !  in other words the right hand has no idea of what the left hand is doing and on top of this the management wastes thousands of the budgeted dollars(too save pennies) that could be spent wisely to fix things like filthy washrooms, air problems toxins, dust, unsafe work areas, ancient fixtures…………..but what they do is spend their money on biscuits and coffee and cold calls to unsuspecting customers that drop their names into the lame draws monthly or whatever!

I am horrified to believe I actually lasted almost to the end of my probationary time (wasted there) and still to this day can not get the place out of my head.

I am convinced that this horrible place will go belly up soon, even though it is run by Chase Manhattan Bank of greed…… and by the way I hope that the managers happen to read this  (rant) and then realize that they are responsible for making the hard working (untrained associates)………..that they don’t even trust ,look in the mirror and take the blame themselves…they no who they are !…….in 30 years of retail I have never seen such complete assholes run a circus act like they do!

I highly recommend that you do not work for sears and I advise you not to shop there either, beware!

Believe me please!

I worked for Sears. I was a member of their Merchandising Team. And other than a control freak supervisor and too many managers all giving different directions and not communicating with one another, I enjoyed my time there and didn’t feel abused at all. I was also properly trained.

I am not surprised at this “rant”. Unfortunately corporations will do anything to make the bottom line look better (which will result in short term gain only) at the expense of the Customer and the employees. I had a really bad experience with Sears 2 years ago. Frontline employees were sympathetic but unable to help with my concerns. Management were just rude and not interested in resolving any of my issues. I WILL NEVER SHOP AT SEARS AGAIN. And I too am surprised they are still in business. Their decision to out source more and more of the work that use to done in house will result in their reputation going even further downhill.

Many places are like that. This might be the reason I can’t seem to find work. They take one look at my resume and go, “Well, this guy might be too smart. We wouldn’t be able to push him around without question. DENIED.”

I work for Sears currently. To tell you the truth I really enjoy my job at Sears. Although I don’t work on the retail side of things. The management is superior to any other place I have worked in. The training was excellent. Although I do find that some of the stuff they do is a little backwards. There customer service is also excellent. Their return policies and compensation programs are far superior to any other company that I have worked for. No complaints here. Further more, yes they did out source to the Phillipines, but who cares? They have accents, but are very easy to understand. The catalog agents in the Phillipines are also trained very well as I order stuff all the time from them. I don’t doubt that you had a bad experience but I am not sure that warrants a rant on a very public website. If no one shopped at Sears, you are only created less jobs and not helping the economy…Help the economy people..Shop away!!

I worked for Sears. I was a team lead and loved it. My training was extensive, my management team was amazing.
I’m sorry your experience sucked, but did you think to take matters in to your own hands? Did you think to talk to your lead or your manager and say “hey, I’m having a tough go at this, is there more training I could take?” or “I don’t know how to do this, could you show me?”
As for the rest of it - welcome to retail, baby.

I worked at Sears call center for almost 5 years, and even though I hated the politics and how they treat you like cattle, but I really loved the people I worked with. I definitely learned a lot about people, and that customer service is really a sport.
But I find that its like any job, nothing is perfect and no matter where you go its all the same S*** just a different pile.

Sears Canada ( B.C.) is a great place to work for. I worked for Sears for over 7 years. I started as Christmas help, and they kept me on because I was a good employee. I had good training, and the management staff was very helpful. There was lots of rewards and an incentive program. You didn’t last at Sears because you were not good enough for their high standands. Sears is a great place to work and shop.

I’ve only ever had horrendous customer service at Sears. But, then again, I do most everywhere these days. I worked in customer service for many years and I know how the customer is *supposed* to be treated. It just doesn’t happen anymore.

I currently work for Sears. I was hired as christmas staff, but kept on due to my good work ethic. My training was defintely a joke, as I was taught by other associates who all taught differently , and not HR or our team lead, like we’re suppose to. The company is slowly going down unfortunately, as we can’t seem to get on the same page for the company policies! Ive been told by store management to not do any price adjustments unless they bring the product in. How crazy is that?? Thats her OWN policy, but we had to inforce it since she was the big boss. Not a single person at my location is happy, but many are sticking around because they are near retirement. I myself are trying to get out, but it is hard finding permanent full time, so for now, i have to dread going to work. I must say though, the associates I work with are terrrific! we all get along, and I think we all bond over getting out of this dump!

I also work for Sears. Abuse isnt even a strong enough word to describe how we are treated. We havent had a raise in 3 yrs! The benefit packages are a complete rip off, IF you qualify. I too love the people I work with. Management is whats the problem. We get yelled at when we dont make our sales targets, when theres no customers shopping, for taking a product back, for giving a customer a good deal on a damaged product that would never sell otherwise, I could go on and on. Our Reg prices are rediculous, and the sales prices just arent the same as they use to be. Ive noticed within the last year that we are starting to get cheap quality products, especially in Housewares. We use to be on top, now we dont even compare to our “competitor” The Bay. I am getting married next year, and we plan to register at The Bay and Home Outfitters, its easier to find products and they have what you need!

I WAS a customer of sears until last year, when I bought a clearance toasteroven, took it home, and realized it was already used. I called the store, told them the story and if I can exchange it, so the lady said no problem. I brought it back the next day, and the dept manager happened to be the one to serve me, and she said she would not take it back because she thought it was ME who used it! I couldnt believe this. I was being blamed for something that they sold me dirty! Because of this, I will no longer shop there, and I will continue to spread the word of that unnecassary ordeal.

JAKE - the exact same thing happened to me with a toaster oven. I registered for a toaster oven when I got married and received it as a shower gift. It was in a box and sealed up, and I was given a gift receipt from the person who purchased it for me. I took it out of the box and it was old, dirty and had been used. I immediately took it back to the store with the box and receipt. The store basically treated me like I was trying to scam them and that I was trying to switch the toaster oven for money. They told me to take it to the store it was purchased at, so I drove to another city, told them my story and the same thing happened. The sales clerk got her manager too and they wouldn’t help me. They acted like again like I was trying to scam them, I was so embarrassed.

    I won’t shop there either.

I worked at Sears and I have to say this was the worst management I had seen in over 30 yrs of retail! We were commisioned and there were 2 sharks that were basically allowed to steal everyone else’s sales and when it was brought to the management’s attention they said something would be done. They said we wouldn’t hear about it as it is between management and the person but for sure something would be done.Nothing was done so the other 5 salespeople were just feeding those 2 salespeople all their sales . If you did the proper follow up and contacted the customers and got them back in the store and even if the customers asked for you the sales were taken by those other 2 as their own.It was the worst selling atmosphere I had ever seen which made it hard on the customers as well as you could cut theair with a knife there was that much tension there.

I was just in a Sears about a month or so ago for the first time in ages. I spent about 20 minutes in the menswear department with no one having approached me to ask if I needed assistance. I then sauntered over to the shoe department, where I spent about 15 minutes looking all over the place to see if they had a style I liked. Meanwhile the woman on duty in that department acted as if I were invisible. Then, as I exited the store, I noticed two sales clerks standing with hands in pockets gabbing with one another as I walked past. Neither made eye contact. I felt like saying, “Say goodbye to my wallet as it travels with me out the door and to a competitor!â€

This is not the way to run a successful business!

I was scanned like in the airport (sears must have a lot of enemy’s) just to fill out a application although I had emailed my resume and brought one with me. I suppose I needed to prove I could use a PEN. I was interviewed buy some automaton punk bald kid that didn’t like me. that’s OK I dont like people that shave there heads I think they are commiting crimes) and fire 35 employees all at once just to hire more and keep the wages down and make a name for himself.

I was just recently fired from my position in the warehouse of a Sears Home Store in eastern Ontario. I had worked there for eleven and a half years; in fact I was the only remaining employee who set up the store before it opened. I had been warned by supervisors past and present that the manager did not like me and was out to get me. She had told them to cut my hours specifically to minimum possible.I was getting 9 hours one week and eleven hours the next. I’m sure this discrimination was intended to force me to quit. My hours were not the only ones cut but the most severely given that I was the senior man in the department. This manager had the audacity to bring in her live-in boyfriend when we were not there to do our work and pay him under the table with gift cards. This was padding her home income which to me is not only a breach of our contract with sears but also a serious conflict of interest and outright fraud against the company. Now don’t say I should report it because these people are all unethical and cover each other. The sales staff say absolutely horrid things about customers behind their backs as they also do about the manager. Nobody there likes her or thinks she is fit to manage the store. She certainly has no idea about the warehouse area. I called in the Ministry of Labour to deal with an unsafe workplace and sales staff and office staff loading customer vehicles in street shoes and flip-flops during hours we were closed for pickups. So this firing is basically reprisal for that. Anyway the bottom line is that I have a lawyers appointment in a couple of weeks to initiate lawsuits against Sears, the manager and her boyfriend. I have no patience for corrupt people. The beauty of the entire thing is that for the past 23 years or so I have always worn a mini voice activated tape recorder and mike at work to cover just such situations. Justice wiil be served. Amen!!!

I WAS A LOYAL EMPLOYEE FOR ALMOST 11 YRS.I AM A SENIOR AND VERY WELL KNOWN IN THE RETAIL INDUSTRY 18 YRS EXPERIENCE. SUDDENLY I WAS TERMINATED BECAUSE OF STORE MANAGER DID NOT LIKE THE RESPONSE I GAVE WHEN, I SAID THAT YOUR REMARK WAS UNCALLED FOR AND THAT HE WAS NASTY.

HIS RESPONSE WAS I SHOULD KIK YOU ASS OUT OF HERE
IT APPEARS RIDICULE EMPLOYEES AT ALL COST HIS ONLY CONCERN IS HIS JOB AS STORE MANAGER BEFORE EVERYTHING ELSE.

HE GOT ALL FLUSTED AND TOLD ME YOU HAVE GUTS TO SAY THAT TO ME. HE WAS VISIBLY UP SET AS WAS I.THE UNCALLED REMARK MADE TO TO THE EFFECT THIS GUY ADDRESSING AN EMPLOYEE YOU HAVE TO WATCH HIM, HE MR. SOCIAL, THIS CAUSED BE EMBARASSMENT AS IT WAS SAID ON THE SELLING FLOOR IN FRONT OF CUSTOMERS, WHEN HE SAW I WAS UPSET HE SAID IT WAS ONLY A jOKE, YOU SHOULD KNOW ME BY KNOW. I APOLOGIZED, HIS RESPONSE WAS YOU HAD BETTER AND ALL WAS LEFT AT THAT.
THE NEXT SCHEDULED WORKING DAY I WAS TOLD BY OUR TEAM LEAD WITH LESS THAN THREE MONTHS EXPERIENCE TOTALLY CONFUSED TOLD WHAT TO DO BY HIS SUPERIORS DO WHAT YOU CAN TO HUMILATE THIS EMPLOYEE,THAT THE STORE MANAGER WANTED TO SEE ME WHEN I COME INTO WORK.I KNEW WHAT THIS MEANT.

IT’S A WITCH HUNT FOR LAST NUMBER OF YEARS, IT SEEMS SOME OF THE TEAM LEADS AND ASSISTANT STORE MANAGERS DO NOT APPRECIATE THAT A KNOWLEDGABLE ASSOCIATE CAN SHOW LEADERSHIP, OR THAT NEW EMPLOYEES ASK ME QUESTIONS, WHEN LOYAL CUSTOMERS COME IN THE DEPARTMENT AND ARE RECOGNIZE BY NAME, THIS IS PERCEIVED BY SO CALLED TEAM LEADERS AS SOCIALIZING.

MY WORKING HOURS FOR A WEEK WERE HUMILATING, DEMEANING AND TANT AMOUNT TO DISQUISED DISMISSAL.I UNDERSTOOD THAT DURING THE SUMMER MONTHS HOURS ARE REDUCED BUT TO CONTINUE AFTER VACATION PERIOD ASSUMING END OF JULY HOURS WOULD IMPROVE IT GOT WORSE AND CAUSE ME UNDUE STRESS AND MANY A SLEEPLESS NITE. MY AVERAGE NO. HOURS WORKED IN A GIVE WEEK WERE 13 HRS TO 14.5 HRS. THIS IS EQUAL ANIMALS IN A CIRCUS A REWARD IF THEY REACTED TO THE RING MASTERS WHIP. I MUST SAY THIS UPSETME MANY TIMES AND TOLD THE TEAM LEAD THIS WAS HUMILATING, IT COULD CARE LESS, IT SEEMED THE MORE I ASKED FOR THE REASON THE WORST IT GOT.

WHEN IT YOU CAME FOR YOUR SHIFT DATA ON THE TASK SHEET FOR EACH ASSOCIATE WAS WRITTEN, UNLESS YOU VISIBILY CHALLANGED YOU KNEW WHAT WAS REQUIRED, NOT GO THROUGH A SCENARIO FROM THE LEAD NOW SO AND SO THIS IS WHAT I WANT YOU TO DO, IT WAS OBVIOUS BUT IT DESCIDED TO DO ITS SPEEL ONLY TO VEX THE EMPLOYEES, TIME AND AGAIN IT WAS TOLD THAT WE ARE NOT IN A KINDERGARDEN , WE ARE RESPONSIBLE ADULTS, IT WOULD NOD BUT SAY, YES I KNOW IF THIS IS NOT HARRASMENT WHAT IS.

IT HAS CAUSED UNDO STRESS TO ME AND FAMILY MEMBERS. ALL BECAUSE SOME EMPOWERED PERSON WITH A TITLE SAYS DANCE TO THE PUPPETIER.

DARE YOU INVESTIGATE EMPLOYESS COMPLAINTS AT STORE AND HEAD OFFICE WHICH ARE LEGITAMITE. OR ALL WILL SWEPT UNDER THE TABLE AND CONSIDERED THIS AS HOGWASH.

IT IS COMMON COURTESY TO RESPOND TO THESE TRUTHS OR DO WE HAVE TO RESORT AND GO TO THE LABOUR BOARD AND ISSUE A COMPLAINT.

well after reading all the negative stuff here I have to respond in saying that Sears for me has been great over the years…35 to be exact…yes I am a lifer! Everyone at my store in B.C. respects me and I have some amazing friendships from working there. Management does focus on TARGETS and yes I hate the cold calling too, but lets show a little respect! Business is tough and pleasing the customer at times can be a challenge, but thats my job. You must put the interest of others first to be a success. Yes its not easy to take orders when you dont think they make sense but use your own ideas to work into the plan! My only complaint … 35 years of standing 7.5 hours a day without being aloud to sit down (even when I was 9 months pregnant and also following surgeries) is a little like slavery! Also Toronto manages our air conditioning and we are in B.C.! WHAT is that about…it is hot here and we go in to sweat it out every day. Toronto says we dont get air until June 10!!! HELP! So if you are not happy…find work somewhere else. Someplace where you feel appreciated. Good Luck to all!

I worked with Sears (Calgary) for 2 months. Funny before joining I checked this website and now here I am to “post”.

If you are going to join Sears my advice is “Be Careful” do not expect more. Do not expect fairness and self respect. Whatever situation is forcing you to work, just stick to the job if you can. Some days you might go home in tears. But that is how Sears is.

As for me, I just said “I quit” in a snap. Before even the Store manager can make his vicious attacks and humiliation. He was shocked because he did not think I will. (I used to be a Temp, construction so job is not a problem and these people are taking advantage of the fear)

I drafted so many letters for the Company to let them know about the situation in which I left. But I dont think it will be of any help. The management is “Hand in Hand”

So I just thought I will post this one here. Believe me I have 15 years work experience and know the difference between a “rant” and a genuine concern.

    ———–
A little about my performance, I was a shop owner (they cant handle a shop owner) In the first month I turned around the sale from negative to positive. Encouraged good associates, Rapid Credits went from zero to store second.

They are highly hypocritical, they call me Shop “owner” bloody I have to s**t only where toronto says, in the name of “reflow” even they removed the signs (like Boys 4-6X…) and when told that one customer complained about lack of signs the regional head ISM told that “the customer is a bag”
to me those words are a sin and blasphemy in customer service. The customer may be wrong but never say the customer is a “fool” or “stupid”

    —————

V****r (Store Manager) does not care, maybe you care M***e (Regional Head). Eventhough I just had a glimpse of you I developed some respect for you but in the end your people are also part of you. You cannot disown their actions lest justify.

The store leadership can only work with mediocre people who put up a show for Salary and Survival and who can nod their heads and toe the egocentric, mean and brash leadership. Apart from the personal lack of values and character the store leadership also lives in poverty and cannot afford or care for Success, Pride, Respect, Dignity, Fairness, Sincerity, Human Values, Environment and Safety. But Double Standards, Hypocrisy, “covering your ass†(in his own words), capitalizing on weaker section are the values he practices.

When I ask respect for me, the ISM says “respect should be earned S**a (My name)â€, shouldn’t human beings“deserve†respect? Did the ISM earn her respect with me?

And what happens when I do the same (what was did to me), when my communication shows that you have not earned the respect, when you make a stupid and overlooked reflow, don’t know even what type of racks are going in the floor, abdicate the task to a new comer and force him to do and redo and redo on his own? And when I work my ass off what do I get? I am asked to drop work go home and come back after two days for a discussion by the third class Store manager? What about all the hours of work that I had put in on my own for this poorly planned reflow? You don’t want to talk now? You stand at the door and ask me to get out of the store and come back after two hours? Or “intimidate†me to have a heated discussion right now?

Every action has a reaction, and if mine was a reaction it was due to some of your action (s) you should stop to think what it is and correct the situation instead show disrespect, rudeness and sadistically penalize with an intention to demean and belittle people to show your power. You think you have but you have no power over others.

I was asked about the status of the work with much disrespect, humiliation, the store manager and ISM asking me without even knowing what happened, what is happening or what is being doing then. It hurt a lot when I was asked to drop work and go home without even discussing the concerns or the issues. It was done with intention by the store manager.

It seems that the store leadership believes in a principle of the “unilateralâ€, everything goes only in one direction, you are right and others are wrong. I never thought Canada would do business so mediocre, unfair and worse than some third world countries. Sears gave me a very bad taste of Canadian work culture, values and ethics.

I take a lot of abuse from customers at Sears. There is too many to list. Stand constantly, running around everywhere.

I don’t blame customers entirely because SEARS needs to really get their act straight. IF THEY ADVERTISE SOMETHING OR PROMISE SOMETHING to customers, please MAKE SURE OF ALL LOOPHOLES!! FIND THEM and FIND A SOLUTION. MAKE RULES UP AND STICK TO THEM! make us look like idiots!

    SOME PROBLEMS I HAVE:

    - 10 days EXCHANGE only on Clearance??
POINTLESS !! If Sears wants to get rid of their clearance merchandise, this is defeating the purpose since customers can exchange with a regular item and then refund it!! DUH!

    - TRAIN NEW EMPLOYEES! Don’t make them feel undervalued!!
-OLD EMPLOYEES: Treat them better if you can’t give them raise! GOSH!!

-RETURNS: Why do we even bother to take back something without a tag!! OR PILLOWS at all! GROSS!

-PRICE SCANNER: Why can’t we have one accessible to customers?
    - WASHROOMS: Why do they always stink!?!?

    - WHY DO I EVEN BOTHER?
    nothing will change.

    PLEASE IMPROVE. PLEASE.

Success depends largely on communication, organization, training, respect and recognition for hard work.

I worked for Sears until a long-time, favored employee screamed at me in front of a lineup of customers. I was still quite new, and was having trouble doing a refund for a customer who bought something on a discount. I asked her for help, and she began yelling at me…embarrassing me horribly.
One of the customers in the lineup was so disgusted that he went to a floor manager and complained. Shortly after that, I was let go for unknown reasons.
I was treated very badly at Sears. I worked hard, but was always treated like crap by the manager and some of the employees. I felt very bullied by some of them, even though I was kind and polite to everyone there.
I know they fired me because of that incident. This woman humiliated me in front of a bunch of customers to the point where I walked away in tears.
I felt used and abused by the Sears staff and don’t work in retail anymore. I have found better employment in a much better field of work.
Retail sucks, but Sears was one of the worst experiences I had working retail.

Sears is a sinking ship and after todays 2nd qtr results it is sinking deeper. Waiting till Target comes and there will be lots of jobs for the Sears employee that will be out of a job when they close the doors. It is only a matter of time till it happens and there is nothing they can do about it as the hole is too deep.
